Elliot earns Player of the Match award for nullifying home team's attacks

(Many thanks to Coach Steve for the match report)

Spartak turned up for their final game of the league season just as the rain had started to clear leaving a nice shiny surface for the game against MK Athletic.

We had previously played Athletic twice before Christmas, winning 2-0 and drawing 2-2, and the MK coach commented that we were their ‘bogey team, which I found a little disrespectful as in both games we were clearly the better team (point to prove!!).

For this game we changed formation with 2 at the back, five in midfield and one up front as we knew MK Athletic were strong in the middle of the park and like to take long shots from outside of the penalty area.

The game started as expected with everything going down the middle of the pitch from MK Athletic and Spartak trying to get the ball down and get it out to the wide players who were starting to create some dangerous attacking plays. At the back we looked comfortable as Jack P & Bobby nullified the threat of Athletic's big forward and Bobby in particular winning several key headers in dangerous areas.

Before long Spartak took the lead as a ball was slid into the path Matthew who coolly slotted it past the keeper. Very soon we doubled our lead as Luke latched onto a great through ball and dispatched a great shot into the Athletic net.

More pressure came from Spartak but we then conceded from a dubious corner and a well taken Athletic header.

Second half Spartak came out flying and had several good efforts with Rosie & Stan going close and Jack P weaving through the defence but just hitting his shot wide. Dylan was pushed in the back for a sure penalty but unfortunately the referee didn’t agree before Matthew was then hacked down and dispatched the resulting pen.

More chances came for both sides and MK pulled a goal back before an OG and an exquisite curling effort from Oliver ended a great league campaign.

The Gartec player of the match today was Elliot who was given the job of stopping their dangerous players from shooting long range and as ever was composed and skillful on the ball playing in an unfamiliar position. Well done everyone on another great display and I look forward to writing my end of season report.
