A battling performance in top of table clash versus Bletchley Scot

(Many thanks to Thomas' Dad, Richard, for the match report)

MKDDL U12 Division 7
Bletchey Scot Youth U12 2 v 1 Linslade Galaxy U12 Ajax

All good things must come to an end and the top table clash was going to end the party for one team today. Bletchley Scot Youth had won all 16 of their games this season and hosted Linslade Galaxay U12 Ajax who were on a 15-game winning streak.

Fortunately, both teams had secured promotion so this nail-biter of a game had no real impact on next season, though you wouldn't know it given the intensity, the borderline ferocity of the match.

Ajax looked sharp from the whistle. Harry found Finn in space who crossed to the far corner of the pitch where Foxy was waiting to square the ball to Joe. This move would have carved open any other team in the league but Bletchley were equal to the challenge.

Bletchley, themselves looked sharp in attack, but came up against Big Seb who gave no quarter in central defence, and Luke and Thomas had a knack of showing up wherever there was danger, so Bletchley were having to shoot from distance. Ethan comfortably parried these shots away and was also alive to the through ball, sprinting to the edge of his area to close down the danger.

An early injury to Finn brought Noah onto the pitch who, along with William was able to send Foxy and Joe on dangerous, though ultimately fruitless, runs. However, despite Ajax's counter-attacking threat, Bletchley began to dominate midfield and for a good 5 minutes, Ajax couldn't get out of their half. When Ajax lost the ball to another strong challenge, they were caught out of position, allowing Bletchley the space to score.

With captain Luke's encouragement sounding around the ground, Ajax played with increasing intensity and there was no cap on their energy levels today. George, once again seemed to be paired against their biggest player but held his own and terrorised the left side of the pitch. On the right, Maddy (who didn't stop running) and Little Seb were also strong in their tackles with Seb able to release any pressure with clever passes.

Now that Ajax were competing, the response from Bletchley was, at times, too strong. Big Seb had to pick himself up from three fouls in a row, then take another free kick (just going wide) after George was shoved in the back.

The second half began, and again captain Luke called to his players and again they responded. Little Seb, Noah and Maddy were winning the 50-50 balls and Finn and Foxy looking dangerous in partnership up front. So it was a surprise to see the referee call a penalty for handball when it appeared to bounce of Luke's back. Bletchley's number 10 scored and Ajax were 2-0 down; but not out.

Stirred on like they'd been slapped in the face by Will Smith, Ajax played some of their best football. Harry won one, then two challenges and fed the ball to Joe who cracked the ball into the net from the edge of the area. 2-1

And William nearly followed suit shortly after, winning the ball and sliding it to Joe, though this time it led to just a corner.

Then it was Thomas' turn to go on a driving run on the right, linking with Finn who just failed to get his shot away. The game was on a knife edge and the crowd were transfixed.

Big Seb was hacked down once again and his resulting free kick fell to Joe who's shot was deflected for a corner. But as Ajax were beginning to dominate the game, the clock was ticking down and the game finished 2-1 to Bletchley.

Gartec players of the match were awarded to the two Sebs. Big Seb, with stud marks on both of his thighs had been immense and continued to battle throughout. Little Seb was also recognised for his courage as well as his skillful touch that turns a dangerous situation into an attacking opportunity.

Though Ajax lost today, they showed they will be a hard team to beat next year in Division Six.
