Borussia battle to the end against Bedford Park Rangers

Kick off, an early shot from Bedford Park Rangers goes wide and sends Hugo about a mile away from goal to retrieve the ball. For the first few minutes, BPR keep the pressure on and asking questions of Borussia’s defensive line, with both Jack T & Liam rock-solid in central defense and Jack P & Thomas doing a fine job controlling BPR’s wingers.

At this point, Borussia is struggling to get out of their half of the pitch. A high ball gets cleared for a BPR corner, leading to Borussia’s first counter attack involving Corey, Vinnie and Jake. Coming up against BPR’s very disciplined defenders, Borussia still create the best chance of the game so far, but fail to capitalise from this attack.

BPR keep the pressure on, a save from Hugo at the near post leads to another corner. Borussia fail to mark a BPR defender that has made a run into the box and with the corner kicked high to the back post and no Borussia player nearby, the ball falls on the BPR defender’s feet and he taps the ball in for BPR to take the lead.

Borussia get more into the game now, with a lot of Hugo’s drop kicks finding Vinnie on the left and also Connor on the right wing, who uses his speed to make some fine runs, but BPR’s defenders are doubling up on him, often forcing him wide before he can manage to cross the ball into the box.

A couple of offsides are called against Galaxy with Jacob up against a disciplined defensive line, but Borussia’s defenders and midfielders connect better now with Kayden leading the press in central midfield at this point.

Another BPR corner sails through the box with no one attacking the ball. A weak clearance allows a BPR player to take a shot from the edge of the box and everyone is holding their breath as the ball makes its way to the goal, narrowly missing the crossbar.

Hugo’s goal kick finds Connor, BPR barely manage to clear his cross for a Borussia corner. Vinnie’s delivery is spot on, but no Borussia player manages to get their foot behind the ball. The clearance lands near Corey, who attempts a fine pass in the centre of the box where Jacob is waiting, but his shot gets blocked by a BPR boot.

At the sidelines, substitute player Kenzie remarks: “Currently we’re doing alright, but we need more aggressive tackling play. It’s too easy for them to get around our players at the moment”.

Jack T & Liam and Jack P & Thomas in defense play a higher line now, often forcing BPR to take shots from distance. These are often blocked, but Hugo is forced into making a few saves. If a BPR player gets through, Jack T is doing a great job giving chase, rescuing Borussia on a few occasions.

An offside call against BPR and a good save from Hugo deny BPR another goal just before half-time. Half-time score Borussia 0:1 Bedford Park Rangers.

Early in the second half, it is clear that Borussia’s half-time substitutes - Alfie and Sean in defense, Kenzie and Luciano in midfield - provide Borussia with fresh energy with some quick passes between defense and midfield, helping Borussia to close the gaps and put Jacob, Vinnie and Connor into play.

One of the passes reaches Jacob. With his back to goal at first and after wrangling with two BPR defenders, Jacob manages a well-placed shot on target before going down, but he is alright and can continue to play.

Another BPR corner, and Borussia survive another scare with the team not attacking the ball, then struggling to clear it, forcing Jack T to stretch his right leg for a block that clearly denied BPR an early goal in the second half, which may have sealed the game for the visitors at this point.

BPR is doing a good job to keep play in Borussia’s half, but during a fine counter attack, Jacob muscles his way through the BPR central defenders and plays a wonderful pass for Vinnie, who simply has to tap in the ball from a few yards - Borussia 1:1 Bedford Park Rangers.

The goal energises Borussia, who now ask some questions of BPR’s defenders. BPR only manage to get into Borussia’s half of the pitch a couple of times for a few minutes, with a shot after a corner ball going well wide of Borussia’s goal.

At the other end, attacking pressure from Borussia forces BPR’s defenders into a back pass which the BPR goal keeper picks up with his hands, but Borussia do not take the golden opportunity to go score from an indirect free kick and go up by 2 goals to 1.

At the other end, a great double-save by Hugo, but his drop kick is intercepted and quickly passed to a BPR player, who makes a run on the left all the way into the box. His cross is deflected off a defender’s right hand behind the goal line with the referee deciding on a penalty for BPR.

The BPR aims low and left, Hugo’s chosen to dive to the other side and BPR take the lead. Borussia does not show the same intensity now, and BPR manages several runs on Borussia’s goal. A run by their right winger and a good ball across the face of goal leads to another BPR goal.

Borussia is now stable defensively, but the team do not manage to build up much pressure on BPR. Most of the play is still happening in Borussia’s half of the pitch. At full time, the score remains at Borussia 1:3 Bedford Park Rangers.

A typical cup matchup, the score line between newly-promoted Division 7-Borussia and a Division 6 team that has won all of their games so far this season shows Borussia’s great potential to do well this season. It was a great display of the team’s spirit and ability, with only minor factors tilting the result in the opposition’s favour today.
