Disappointing away defeat for Galaxy in scrappy match

MKDDL U13 Division 1
MK Gallacticos U13 Spartan 2 v 1 Linslade Galaxy U13 Spartak

Linslade Galaxy U13 Spartak travelled to central MK to face a familiar rival in cold and very gusty conditions. Gallacticos were no doubt keen to avenge their cup defeat earlier in the season, whilst for Spartak this was an opportunity to continue their recent good form and cement a top four place in the league.

Spartak started the stronger and looked dangerous on the wings with both Ollie and Theo showing positive forward intent. However, it took until the 9th minute for a chance to materialise as Jack battled his way through the box, but the goalkeeper came out to smother. A few minutes later a dangerous cross gave Spartak another opportunity, but in the end no shot was made.

There was an enforced change when the home side's right-back had to come off due to a heel injury. This actually seemed to help the home side as they then grew into the game. After 22 minutes they had their first shot on goal, but the attempt from 25 yards sailed over.

However, it was the home side that took the lead after 27 minutes with a really pacy attack after Galaxy lost the ball. Their striker zoomed into the box and fired past Thomas to open the scoring.

Their lead didn't last long, however, as on the 31 minutes some good interplay between Jack and Matthew, ended up with Matthew smashing the ball home from six yards to level the scores.

There was still time for a chance from both teams as the first half came to a close. Firstly, Niall lofted the ball forward and Matthew cleverly headed the ball over the out-rushing goalie, but it went wide. Then, another pacy run from the Gallacticos dangerous No.9 resulted in a drilled cross, that Thomas was only just about able to prevent their striker from having a clear chance to score.

The first half ended 1-1 with both teams probably a little bit disappointed.

Unfortunately for Spartak it was the home team that cam out in the second half the stronger team. They were fiercer in the tackle and Spartak were outmuscled in this period.

After just 8 minutes Gallacticos attacked and the Spartak defence couldn't deal with the Spartan attackers and let in a cheap goal. Their was some confusion as the linesman had his flag up, but the referee awarded the goal and Gallacticos regained the lead.

The second half was one of next to no chances. Spartak's best chance was when Matthew couldn't connect properly from 15 yards after a lovely through ball from Luke. Gallacticos meanwhile were happy to settle for some rare counter-attacks that didn't lead to anything clear cut.

As the referee blew the final whistle and the home side celebrated, Spartak knew they hadn't been at their best today. Too many balls were aimed forward aimlessly and too often a poor touch let the home side regain possession. Matthew and Mali looked made a difference when they came on, and Elliot and Joseph looked solid in the left-back position, but as a team they weren't quite on it today. Division 1 is a tough league and there will be losses as well as victories. It's how the team responds that is important - so onwards for the next match!
