MKDDL League Cup
Linslade Galaxy U13 Spartak 5 v 0 MK Gallacticos U13 Spartan
Despite the 11 a.m. kick-off the match began in chilly conditions with both teams hoping to go on a cup run with the promise of a final at MK Dons stadium to look forward to. Gallacticos were a tall team with some of their players towering their coaches, but Spartak knew that they had the technical ability to win as long as they were on their A-game.
The first half was a close affair, though Spartak edged it in terms of possession and the quality of chances created. In particular, Galaxy will wonder how they didn't score from at least one of the several corners they won. Meanwhile, Gallacticos were limited to long-range efforts. Overall, the game was stuck in a pattern of some physical tackles from Gallacticos, one of which resulted in a yellow card, and Spartak trying to pass their way through to goal.
In the end it took some amazing trickery from Theo to break the deadlock after 25 minutes. He picked up the ball down the right channel, skipped skillfully passed two defenders and fed the ball into the danger area of the 6-yard box where Jack was on hand to score.
The second half equally began with both teams looking just as likely to score and Caelan had to make a fine scrambling save to his right to ensure Linslade maintained their lead. 10 minutes into the half coach Matt shouted for a quick corner. Luke heeding this advice sprinted towards the corner, received the ball and scored with a wicked curling shot from the edge of the box. I'm not sure what was better - Matt's quick thinking, or Luke's skill in scoring!
This second goal seem to settle the match and Spartak grew in confidence and began to look dangerous in every attack. The third goal was a second for Jack after some great work and an assist from Matthew. This was shortly followed by a fourth (Elliot calmly rolled it passed the goalkeeper after a superb incisive pass from Luke that cut open the defence). Then with 10 minutes to go Theo wrapped up his superb individual performance by striking home from a corner from 8 yards out.
At the end of the match head Coach Steve was rightly proud of his players, in particular highlighting the great link up play (particularly in the second half) between Matthew and Jack, Theo's skills to break the deadlock, Caelan's distribution from the back and Luke W's efforts from midfield and his great strike. However, every player brought their A-game to see the team home to what was, in the end, a comfortable 5-0 victory.
Roll on Mursley United in the last 16 of the Cup!
