Final score line fails to reflect run of play

(Many thanks to Simon Wood for the match report)

In what has become something of a good-natured local derby, Scorpions faced Stewkley on a cold but clear and sunny April morning.

The game began with good pressure from Scorpions. After an early attempt saw Josh have a go from 25 yards, Scorpions found themselves with a succession of set-pieces around the box. After a couple of corners kicks, Will placed a well struck free kick into the box only to find the ball evade all 3 Scorpions players who’d successfully negotiated Stewkley's offside trap, but to no avail as none of them managed a worthwhile contact with the ball. Shortly afterwards, another free-kick from Theo was met by Will who struck the ball just the wrong side of the left post from 12 yards.

Eventually the deadlock was broken, but against the run of play. A hopeful strike from 30 yards saw the ball float over Scorpions keeper – 1-0 to Stewkley.

Goals 2 and 3 for Stewkley followed in quick succession – a tidy attack down the right and then a scrappy tap in from a corner.

Though the tables had definitely turned against Scorpions and at times energy levels seemed low, Stewkley weren’t having everything their way. Great control from Will, culminating in a ‘turn and volley’ was the best of the attempts but it cleared the cross bar and so, after a 4th scrappy goal from Stewkley, halftime came at 4-0.

The second half began with Scorpions having more control. Despite a spectacular goal from Theo – which unfortunately saw him nodding into his own net - the better of the second half was Scorpions. With attempts from Cody from 20 yards, a shot from Nat from 5 yards blocked on the line, some good work from Josh and a well saved attempt from JJ, Scorpions didn’t let their heads drop.

A goal for Scorpions finally came as the ball came to Nat on the edge of the box. He turned and slotted along the ground past the keeper to make it 5-1 with 15 mins to play.

One final goal for Stewkley – direct from a well taken central free kick from fully 35 yards – meant the tie ended 6-1.

The well organised Stewkley deserved the victory but the score didn’t really represent the balance of play in an often end to end, do-si-do of a game.

Well done lads.
