MKDDL U14 Division 1
Aspley Guise U14 Tigers 0 v 1 Linslade Galaxy U14 Spartak
After the jubilation of last week's County Cup success Spartak travelled to face Aspley Guise who, despite being in the bottom half of the table, were a strong and skillful side. Galaxy therefore knew, as the match kicked off in sunny conditions, that this was going to be a close match and so it proved.
The first half, in particular, saw the teams evenly matched with little action of note. On the 10th minute Jack J showed his typically strength before firing a long diagonal ball to Theo and Caelan up front, but the home goalkeeper did well to block the effort. This aside it was a couple of dangerous attacking moments for Linslade, but they couldn't get their shots away as the home team defended well.
For their part Aspley had a couple of attempts themselves. Midway through the half they had a low raking effort from just outside the box which skittled past the far post. Then in the last minute of the first half a free-kick was very nicely delivered into the box and it needed Ethan to clear for a corner.
Thomas punched out well from this corner leading to a Spartak counter attack with Ethan running down the left. The ball came inside to Theo who took a shot from 20 yards that skimmed the outside of the post.
Apart from this last minute action it was a quiet first half and both teams knew they would have to pick up the intensity if they wanted to come away with all three points. In the event it was Spartak who began to dominate and have the more clear cut chances.
Linslade could well have taken the lead in the third minute with the Aspley keeper well out of his goal and Charlie having an open goal in front of him. However, the distance still made this a difficult effort and Charlie screwed his shot wide.
Thomas in goal ended up having a relatively stress free morning with the home side being limited to rare attacking moments. On the 14th minute effort the home team did manage to find a way through and Thomas had to save smartly with his feet and then two minutes later there was some brilliant defending from Tycho to block shot on the 6 yard line.
After this it was all Galaxy, though it took some delectable skills from Matthew to break the deadlock. Owen was at the edge of the box and his header went through to Matthew. Matthew showed all his skills to drag the ball back to leave the defender in his wake and then fire in a curling shot perfectly into the far corner.
On the 32nd minute Spartak had a well executed free kick with dummy runners at the far post but Luke W's delivery actually came in more centrally and Owen had a great chance to double Galaxy's lead, but his header went wide.
Then, just a minute later, Owen made a great run with just the goalkeeper to beat; however, the assistant flagged for offside to the dismay of all the Spartak supporters who were in line with this action and could clearly see that Owen had timed his run perfectly.
That proved to be the last moment of the match and Spartak took back with them back to Linslade a well deserved three points that places this talented team third in the Division 1 table with just one league match left to play.
