Deadly set pieces give Boca successive victories

(Many thanks to Rob Lane for the match report)

MKDDL U15 Division 3
Linslade Galaxy U15 Boca Juniors 3-0 Tattenhoe Youth U15 Pumas

It was a cold, crisp and sunny morning. The overnight frost was soon melted away by the warm sun before kick off and the pitch was in great condition as a result of the additional moisture. Boca were up against promotion rivals Tattenhoe Youth Pumas. Before kick off, Pumas were the only team in the league that Boca had not beaten this season, with the previous tight encounter ending in a 1-0 defeat for Boca.

The Boca players were clearly all up for this game and started the game strongly. In the first minute, Jacob Thomas broke away down the right wing, drove into the area, rounding the stricken Pumas goalie. The goalie tripped Jacob, preventing Jacob from striking for goal but Jacob stayed on his feet and no penalty was given. Galaxy continued their intense & relentless pressing. Pumas were trying to play football but Boca were quick to press, disrupt and force the Pumas players into mistakes. Callum Scott, Jack Welchman, Bobby Forsythe and Louise Woodford were winning all of their 50/50 challenges and were then linking together some great passing moves to create chances.

In the early stages Boca put in 2 very dangerous crosses, one from Louis on the left which was just too high for Bobby to finish and then another from Jacob on the right, which just evaded Louis coming in at the back post. On both occasions the Pumas goalie was caught flapping at the crosses and Boca were very unlucky not to be in front.

Midway into the first half, the pressure, intensity and quality of the Boca play was rewarded. Ben Stunell beautifully delivered a long freekick, from just inside the Boca half, into the Pumas penalty area. Bobby rose first and strongest and flicked the ball on, Louis arrived into the left centre of the penalty box and expertly nodded his finish into the right side of the Pumas goal, 1-0.

A few minutes later Boca earned a corner, Callum swept in another superb delivery which the Pumas goalie could not get close too. The ball was headed back across the Pumas 6 yard box and Jacob managed to get his foot in front of the Pumas defender to nudge the ball into the back of the net, taking a painful kick to the calf in the process, 2-0.

It was now all one way traffic, with Boca showing their dominance and class. The Galaxy boys were passing the ball beautfully and creating opportunities with their flowing moves. Callum was pulling the strings in the centre of the park and Tom Alexander was getting more space to drive forward alongside him. Luca Le Gassicke was linking up well with Ben down the Boca right, allowing Ben to overlap and create some great crossing chances. Another great cross from the Boca left appeared to be handled by the Pumas defender in the box but again the shouts for a penalty were waved away.

Galaxy completed their set piece masterclass when Callum delivered in another dangerous corner. The Pumas goalie was again beaten by the flight of the ball and Harry Shore timed his run perfectly, rose up superbly and headed his finish into the open net, 3-0.

Boca had put in one of the best first half performances of the season and blown away a strong team with their intensity and high-quality football.

Pumas came out for the second half with a renewed spirit and Boca could not quite maintain the energy levels that they had shown in the first half. The game became a bit scrappier, Boca went through a spell of trying to play too directly and giving the ball away but Jack was reintroduced and his ability to get the ball down and set the tempo with his passing got Boca back into a better place.

As the half wore on, Boca began to sit a little deeper, defend their clean sheet and hit Pumas on the counter attack. Harry, Ben, Will Gibson-Housden and Harley Samuels showed their strong defensive abilities at the back. Against some tall, strong and physical Pumas attackers the Boca defenders were coming out on top every time and rarely giving Pumas a sight of goal.

Late in the game, Pumas created their best chance to score but Dan Ingram fantastically saved the close range strike, pushing the ball wide of the right post.

It was a second successive victory for Boca and a second successive clean sheet. Boca won the game in the first half and then showed fantastic concentration and game management to see out an important victory. This victory temporarily puts Boca back on top of the league, as leaders Harrold & Carlton did not play. Harrold and Carlton are still strong favourites for the title but this win does give Galaxy a good cushion for second place and promotion.

This was a fantastic team performance, so there were several candidates for Gartec Player of the Match. Callum stole the show in the first half, Ben and Will were superb in defence but the award was shared between Jack, who was outstanding in the holding midfield role and Harry, who dominated at the back and crowned his display with a well taken goal.
