Linslade Galaxy U15 Boca Juniors 6 - 0 Willen U15 Meerkats

It was a dry, overcast but breezy morning for Boca's final home game of the season, against Willen Meerkats. Over Easter other results confirmed that Boca could not finish any lower than runners up in the league. League leaders Harold & Carlton still had 4 games to play but it is difficult to see how they can drop enough points to give Boca a chance for the title. Boca had beaten Willen by an aggregate of 13-2 over their previous two meetings. All of this meant that there was a slight feeling of complacency amongst the players when the game started.

Boca were poor in the first half, they lacked their usual intensity, they played too many long balls, were not getting the ball down to pass and every ball was being channelled directly down the centre, leaving Bobby Forsythe chasing lost causes upfront. Boca remained solid at the back and Willen never looked like scoring but the football was some of the worst Boca have played all season.

Boca did take the lead when a first-time lobbed volley forward from Jack Welchman was nodded back to Callum Scott by Bobby. Callum played an aerial through ball to Louis Woodford in the Meerkats box. Louis was able to get the ball under control and then lob the goalie with one of this trade mark chipped finishes, 1-0.

After a stern team talk at half time, Boca immediately started to play better football in the second half. The boys were encouraged to play out from the back more, as Meerkats were not pressing the Galaxy defence. This approach led to much more flowing, passing football from Boca, playing through the lines and cutting the Meerkats to pieces. As the half wore on, Willen tried to press higher to stop Galaxy from playing around them but all this did was create more space in behind the Willen midfield for Boca to exploit.

Midway through the second half a flowing move down the Boca right freed Jacob Thomas on the wing. Jacob skipped past the Willen left back, drove into the area and then fired his shot into the left side of the Willen net, 2-0.

For the next 20 minutes Galaxy were in full control of the game, were passing well, forcing lots of corners and creating numerous chances. A third goal finally came when Boca recycled possession following a corner. The ball was chipped over the Willen defence, flicked on by Will Gibson-Housden and found Bobby unmarked, 6 yards out in the centre of the Willen box. Bobby took the ball on his chest and then volleyed his finish past the Willen goalie and into the roof of the net, 3-0.

This third goal broke the remaining Willen spirit and opened the flood gates for Galaxy. A fourth goal was added when Callum found Louis upfront and Louis chipped the Willen goalie for a second time in the game, 4-0.

A fifth goal arrived from a Callum corner, swung in to the near post flicked on and then tapped in by Ben Stunell at the back post.

Ben then added a sixth and final goal, when another Callum corner was recycled by Jacob on the left side of the area, fed back to Ben on the edge of the area, Ben shifted the ball onto his right foot and then hit a pile driver finish into the top of the Willen goal. A fantastic brace of goals for Ben who had been a constant threat for Boca, driving forward from right back. In the last part of the game Ben linked up well with Liam Robertson ahead of him and Liam produced some excellent passes, touches and attacking moments, 6-0.

The much improved second half performance was pleasing for Boca but just as pleasing was the third successive clean sheet. Harry Shore and Will, in central defence, were relatively untroubled all game and this also meant that Dan Ingram in goal had little to do. Willen did hit the post in the final seconds of the game, after Boca became a little relaxed with their passing at the back but this was the only notable chance for Willen.

There were a few candidates for Gartec Player of the Match. Ben was fantastic all game and deserved his goals, Louis was a constant threat and took his goals well, Jack was superb in central midfield, he retained possession well, got the ball moving and alongside Josh Lane, dominated the centre of the pitch in the second half. The award went to Will who had another outstanding game at the back. Will never gave the Willen attackers a hope going forwards but it was his distribution, positioning and decision making which earned him player of the match. Whether playing passes short or long Will was right on the money today and started many of Boca's good moves in the second half.

A week off and then Boca play their final league game of the season against Tattenhoe Youth Pumas on 7th May.
