Boca recover from early goal to defeat Tattenhoe Youth

(Many thanks to Rob Lane for the match report)

MKDDL U16 Division 2
Tattenhoe Youth U16 Pumas 3 - 5 Linslade Galaxy U16 Boca Juniors

Boca played their first away fixture of the season against, their bogey team, Tattenhoe Youth Pumas, who had beaten Boca twice at U15 level. Overnight rain stopped just in time for kick off but a week of wet weather had left the Tattenhoe pitch soft and slick. The pitch was on a slope from one goal to another and Tattenhoe decided to kick uphill in the first half.

It was an early kick off and Boca started like they were still half asleep. Within the first minute, a hopeful ball forward from Pumas led to a mix up between Galaxy centre back and goalie, the Pumas no. 4 skipped in between them both and slotted his finish into the open goal, 0-1.

The early goal did not seem to rouse the Boca players and they were still lacking urgency and intensity in their play, giving the Pumas players too much time and giving the ball away when they did regain possession. Some of the boys were slipping about because they did not have the correct boots for the softer conditions, leading to a couple of early mistakes.

Gradually, Galaxy did start to easy their way into the game and create some chances. Bobby Forsythe was linking up well with Jacob Thomas down the Boca right and Joe Carr was starting to pull strings in the no.10 position. Some chances fell to Zach Theodorou and on two occasions there were rebounds from Zach's efforts that fell to Boca players, who forced stops from the Pumas goalie, first from Bobby and second from Louis Woodford.

A throw in down the Boca right was taken by Jacob, into the feet of Bobby, who played back to Jacob. Jacob took the ball to the byline, near the corner flag, and swung in a deep cross to the back post. Louis arrived and squared the ball back across the face of the goal for Zach to tap home at the far post, 1-1.

A few minutes later, Boca took the lead. This time Zach sprinted through the Pumas defence, rounded the goalie and squeezed his finish inside the right post, 2-1.

Boca finished the half more in control of the game, limiting Pumas to very few attacks but not able to take full advantage of playing downhill to grab a third goal.

In the second half Boca started to play some better football. They were playing uphill which naturally gave Pumas more attacking opportunities but Boca were competing more, trying to move the ball around and creating more flowing attacks. Callum Scott was having a dominant game in central midfield, he was winning all of his personal battles and his passing was on point.

Against the run of play, Tattenhoe won a corner. The initial corner was won by Galaxy but they did not clear their box and the Pumas no.4 guided home his second of the game, 2-2.
Boca continued to knock the ball around a little better. From a Boca goal kick, Ben Stunell played the ball out to Callum in midfield. Callum played a set back pass to Jack Welchman. Jack drove forward and then played a great pass through the lines to find Louis. Louis turned and threaded the ball to Zach, who sprinted on to the pass, rounded the goalie and converted his hat trick, 3-2.

Boca were now firmly on top and began to get through and around the Pumas defence more regularly but there was still danger from Pumas counter attacks, especially through their big, quick and physical centre forward.

From one counter attack, Pumas strung together a couple of good passes and crossed the ball to their No.4, who arrived at the centre spot. He guided his finish towards the left corner of the goal but Dan Ingram pulled off a wonderful diving save to tip the ball around the left post and keep Boca ahead.

A speculative effort, from the edge of the Pumas penalty area, slipped under the Tattenhoe goalie and into the corner of the net for Zach's and Galaxy's fourth goal, 4-2.

Soon after, Zach added a fifth with a trade mark breakaway goal. He rounded the goalie and calmly passed the ball into the net to put the game to bed, 5-2.

Late in the game, the Tattenhoe no.4 drove into the Boca area but took the ball through with his arm, the ball almost resting on his arm as he entered the box. He slotted his finish into the bottom left corner and to Boca's dismay the ref gave the consolation goal, 5-3.

Overall, it had been an unusual, stuttering & mixed performance from Boca. They started very slowly, lacking intensity and giving the ball away too easily. They grew into the game and were much more fluid in the second half.

Zach has now scored 15 goals in his last 3 league games and Boca can thank him for winning a game, when the performance was not their best.

Zach could easily have been Gartec player of the match for a second week in a row but the award went to Callum, who had a superb game in midfield, leading the way with his work rate, tough tackling and great passing.

Next week Boca have a rest week, whilst league cup ties are played.
